2008). Smart environments and ambient intelligence constitute prominent fields of research on ubiquitous computing (Georgantas et al. 2010). A hot topic in this area is the realization of various types of middleware solutions that are designed to provide the software infrastructure for specific application scenarios (Schiele et al. 2010). Typical examples for such research platforms include, for example: • Middleware architecture for ambient intelligence environments at home (Georgantas et al. 2010) • The PERSONA service platform for ambient assisted living (Tazari et al.

These are used for the adaptation of modular production processes, user assistance via a multimodal mobile interface, as well as for the control of robots. The S EM P RO M technology of the digital product memories led to a paradigm shift in production, logistics, trade, maintenance and robotics. Projects, products and processes using S EM P RO M technology are requested to show the corresponding S EM P RO M logo (Fig. 3). S EM P RO M is a so-far-unique contribution to the Internet of Things with the revolutionary concept of semantic product memories.

A modular design can make it easier to adapt to given technical constraints, and a well-structured decomposition of product memory functionality into different DPM functions or services allows an application to select the appropriate interface. The term memory function will be used to denote such DPM services, which comprise core capabilities ranging from basic read/write access to a product memory data store, through selective querying of memory contents, to more advanced information processing for building up the memory over time.
